A 43-year-old Burnsville man was arrested in Mower County Tuesday night after a chase with police and is being held pending charges for theft and fleeing police.

A Brownsdale officer pulled the man over at 8:20 p.m. Tuesday at 270th Street and Highway 218, but the man then sped away, Sheriff Terese Amazi said. The officer chased the man for 8.5 miles at speeds of more than 85 mph before the suspect stopped again.

The vehicle had been reported stolen from the Cheers bar in Waltham, along with a jacket, check book and credit cards, Amazi said. The man allegedly refused to submit to an alcohol test.

The man also had several warrants out for his arrest from Ramsey and Hennepin county, Amazi said.

A 43-year-old Austin man was jailed Tuesday night and is awaiting charges for assaulting his wife and a police officer.

The man's 36-year-old wife was called to pick her husband up from a friend's house, Capt. Curt Rude said. She did so but on the ride home, the man reportedly used abusive language, swung the door open and shut and grabbed the woman's hair. His wife sprayed him with pepper spray and called police to the 1600 block of First Avenue Southeast.

Officers arrived and spoke to the couple. The man said he didn't know why she sprayed him. The woman told her version of the story and one of the officers tried to arrest him.

The suspect reportedly struggled with police and fell to the ground with the officer. When he was told he would be sprayed by police, the man complied with the arrest. He then spat toward the officer as he lay on the ground, Rude said.

The man could be charged with fourth-degree felony assault for spitting, fifth-degree domestic assault, obstructing the legal process with force and disorderly conduct, Rude said.

Austin police aren't saying much about an “incident" Tuesday night in southeast Austin.

Capt. Curt Rude said this morning that police are investigating an incident, which occurred along the bike trail near Second Street Southeast and the Cedar River.

A call came into dispatch at approximately 7:15 p.m. Tuesday, Rude said. Police are examining the scene and circumstances surrounding it. No arrests were made as of this morning.
